Cushman® Golf Cart History

 

One of the leading names in American golf cart manufacturing for many decades has been Cushman. The company’s vintage designs are still out on the market so you can score yourself a reliable golf cart that also looks great. In the Beginning

 

Cushman Motor Works was founded in Lincoln, Nebraska, in 1901 by Everette and Clinton Cushman. At first, the company manufactured gasoline-powered motors. In 1919, the business was passed on to Charles Ammon, and he began to manufacture motorized scooters in 1936. The very first three-wheeled and four-wheeled Cushman golf carts came about during the 1950s. Many popular celebrities who enjoyed golf chose to drive Cushman golf carts during this era, including comedian Bob Hope, singer Frank Sinatra and President Dwight D. Eisenhower.

 

Both gas and electric models were designed for a few decades before the Cushman golf cart lineup was retired in 1975. Cushman produced industrial vehicles for the next several years before being purchased by Ransomes Ltd. in 1989, then by industry titan Textron in 1998. Cushman utility vehicles are produced to this day under the Jacobson Golf & Turf Products division of Textron, while vintage Cushman golf carts still circulate in the used market.

 

Golf Cart Models

 

One iconic Cushman vehicle was the “Meter Maid,” which was a cart used by municipal patrols for writing parking tickets. Another commonly-seen Cushman model was the “Scotsman,” which had a top speed of 12 miles per hour. This versatile vehicle was used as a dump truck with the addition of a dump bed. The “Cushman Combo” model had a seat that flipped down in order to create space for two additional passengers. When the extra seating wasn’t needed, the seat was flipped up to make more storage space for golf bags and other cargo.
